This slight sketch, made with the book inverted, belongs to a small series of composition studies that combine Claudian prototypes with French scenery, both sketched during a visit to France in 1821. A possible prototype for this study, which contains a similar arched bridge, is Claude Lorrain’s painting, Landscape with Rural Dance, 1639 (Louvre, Paris) which Turner copied in the Dieppe, Rouen and Paris sketchbook (Tate D24561; CCLVIII 32a).1 The sketch may also relate to studies on folios 89 and 90 verso (D17666, D13669) which contain similar looking bridges.
A tear has been repaired at the top right of the page.
