Although drawn on pages near the end of this sketchbook, this sketch and the similar on folio 77 verso (D04490) derive from earlier in Turner’s tour. He took two days to make the sixty-five miles from Lyon to Grenoble, where he spent several more exploring the city and its surroundings. Most of his drawings of the region were made in his larger Grenoble series (Tate, D04493–D04589; D40023; D44064; D40197–D40209; Turner Bequest LXXIV), but these smaller memoranda must represent some of his first impressions and are carefully drawn.
