Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner passed through Basle on his way back to France along the Rhine. He visited both the Swiss and German portions of the city on either side of the river. This view seems to be taken from the German bank, with the twin spires of the cathedral on the Swiss side at left of centre. A more expansive view is on folio 9 of this sketchbook (D04796) and a probable view of the cathedral’s nave is on folio 43 (D04786).
Finberg recorded that the present sheet and those now bound as folios 41 and 42 (Tate D04784, D04785) were ‘found in a parcel labelled “A.B.30 P.O. Pencil and colour. Valueless.”’
