This folio contains one of two very similar studies for Turner’s vignette illustrations of A Tempest – Voyage of Columbus 1831–2 (watercolour, Tate D27719; Turner Bequest CCLXXX 202). Above the design is an inscription in pencil which has not been deciphered, but does not seem to be a line from Rogers’s poem as one might expect. The other design is on the opposite page of this sketchbook, folio 29 verso (D25694); see that entry for further information.
