This is one of several sketches in this book of the bridges and mills on the River Irwell at Manchester. This may be Blackfriar’s Bridge, though the absence of the Doric piers suggests it could be the old bridge that was later replaced with Victoria Bridge near Manchester Cathedral. Beyond the bridge are a jumble of factories and mills and the tower of a church that can be seen in several of Turner’s other sketches; see folio 34 verso (D25703) for references.
