With the sketchbook inverted across this and folio 45 (D25724) is a sketch of part of Berwick Castle and the Tweed estuary seen from the east. Along with one of the remaining towers, the most distinctive feature of the castle is the stepped White Wall which descends the steep north bank of the Tweed. There is a similar view on folio 46 (D25726). Turner’s sketch of the town from the other side of the castle in the Abbotsford sketchbook (Tate D26009–D26010; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 48a–49) formed the basis of his watercolour Berwick-upon-Tweed circa 1832 (whereabouts unknown).1
