With the sketchbook inverted are two studies at Berwick-upon-Tweed. At the top of the page is a sketch of Berwick Bridge which is probably seen from the north bank of the Tweed, but south of the structure towards the mouth of the river. Turner made two further studies of the bridge from the north on folio 45 verso (D25725).
The sketch beneath was made either from the bridge itself or from just north of it, and looks north along the north bank of the Tweed with part of the ruins of Berwick Castle at the left (see folio 44 verso; D25723) and the tower of Berwick Town Hall rising above the roofs of the town to the right (see folio 9 verso; D25658).
For references to further sketches of Berwick in this sketchbook, see folio 13 verso (D25665).
