This detailed and carefully drawn sketch, continued on folio 19 (D25797), is a view of the southern end of Derwentwater from around Calf Close Bay. At the centre of the present page is the Lodore Falls Hotel with Brown Dodd above it. The lake and the Derwent Fells to the south-west are on folio 19 with part of Calf Close Bay in the foreground. The sketch on folios 19 verso–20 is similar to the present view, though made from further south.
Further views of Derwentwater are on folios 19 verso–22 (D25798–D25803). These sketches were mis-identified by Finberg as Ullswater.1 This has led to the assumption that they inspired the Ullswater design for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales: Ullswater, Cumberland circa 1833 (watercolour, Brian Pilkinton, London).2 Andrew Wilton, however, pointed out in his catalogue of Turner’s watercolours that the design is more likely to relate to sketches made in 1797.3
