There are several sketches of Carlisle on this sketchbook page: three were made with the book turned to the left and at the bottom of the page is part of a sketch continued from folio 40 verso (D25840). The top sketch shows a church spire, also shown at the left of folio 40 (D25839), with Carlisle Castle at the left.
The second sketch shows Carlisle from the west with Eden Bridge, Carlisle Castle and the Cathedral with the River Caldew in the foreground. Beneath this, a sketch of a winding river is probably a view up the river looking north-west. At the bottom of the page is a sketch showing the same church with a spire as in the sketch at the top of the page. The sketch contains a view of Carlisle on folio 40 verso.
See folio 39 verso (D25838) for references to further views of Carlisle.
