Joseph Mallord William Turner Lincluden Collegiate Church 1831

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 91 Verso:
Lincluden Collegiate Church 1831
D25926
Turner Bequest CCLXVI 91a
Pencil and grey watercolour wash on paper with scratching out, 114 x 187 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the sketchbook inverted, this view of Lincluden Collegiate Church from across the Cluden Water is very similar to the drawing on folio 90 verso (D25924), although it was made from further away. Turner again used scraping out to reveal the white paper through the pre-applied grey wash, but this time less for highlights and more to define the mass of the church and the effect of water.
There are other sketches of Lincluden Church and the Cluden Water on folios 89 verso and 92 verso (D25922, D25928); see also folio 53 verso for further references (D25866).
