With the sketchbook turned to the right are three views of Newark Castle made from the road across the Yarrow Water to the north-west. The top sketch includes in the foreground the road bridge over the Yarrow, near Old Broadmeadows. The hill on the left bank in all three sketches is Foulshiels Hill. The small sketch between the top and middle views of Newark is of nearby hills that are probably Foulshiels and Harehead Hills, made from the same spot.
These sketches were made from a phaeton as Turner returned from his visit to Newark along the opposite bank of the Yarrow Water towards Philiphaugh and Selkirk. There are similar views on the reverse of this sketchbook page (D26067; CCLXVII 79), the entry for which contains more information about Turner’s visit to Newark Castle and references to other sketches and related works.
