Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. Turner shows three versions of the end wall of a gallery, with a section of a sloped ceiling and roof light, and ideas for drapery to protect pictures from glare. See notes to folio 22 (D07005; Turner Bequest CV 19a) which has similar ideas for curtains or blinds around pictures in a gallery with a sloped-edged ceiling, and to folio 46 verso (D07043; Turner Bequest CV 42a) showing a row of pictures on a side wall with a chimneypiece, also shaded by drapes. These are to be associated with Turner’s plans for his own gallery, along with other drawings and diagrams in the sketchbook; see Introduction to the sketchbook for Turner’s new gallery behind his house in Queen Anne Street West, opened in 1822.
