This is one of a series of sketches relating to Sandycombe Lodge, Turner’s self-designed Twickenham house (see the Introduction to the sketchbook), occupying most of the pages between folio 73 verso (D08057) and folio 86 verso (D08083), and apparently made working inwards from the back of the book.
Here Turner shows a set of plans and elevations of the deep, narrow ‘Type A’ type categorised by Patrick Youngblood (as discussed in the Introduction to the Sandycombe section). The classicising ‘Palladian’ motifs in this design include a Diocletian or thermal semi-circular window under the eaves on the entrance (west) front.1 Such a window would feature in the house as built, at the basement level on the garden (east) front.
The top left is occupied with the following notes in ink, showing notional room sizes:
2 Rooms           15 by 18
1 Room            25 by 20
Kitchen           15 by 12
