Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner has inscribed the following in pencil at the top left: ‘Rolfe | 33 Ossulton Street, Summer Town’. The reference is to Ossulston [sic] Street, London, running north from Euston Road and now forming the western boundary of the British Library site; to the west are the housing estates of Somers Town, and nothing remains in the street from Turner’s time.
This is as much as Finberg was able to transcribe, but there are roughly inscribed and rubbed words and numbers below of which only occasional letters and figures can be made out. Along the outer edge, with the page turned vertically, are three fainter lines: [?James] 6 [?New Howick] St | [...] Sold by [...] | Knight [...] 27 [...]’.
Technical notes:
This endpaper forms the outer face of a bellows-type pocket set inside the back cover.
