Inveraray Castle and Duniquoich Hill (Dùn na Cuaiche) are here viewed here from the south, a good view that not only combines the two landmarks, but also (by viewing the castle from the south corner) captures more information about its architecture. Since Turner made his sketch, a third floor has been added to the central structure and the four corner towers have gained conical spires.
At the bottom right of the page is a second sketch of the same view, but from slightly further away so that the shore of Loch Fyne is included in the foreground. The view was familiar to Turner from 1801, when he made a similar sketch of the castle and hill as seen from Inveraray Pier (Tate D03632; Turner Bequest LX A).
