Ben Venue is seen here from the north-east corner of Loch Katrine. From the lower slopes of Ben A’an, seen at the left of the sketch, we look across the loch to the mountain with Ellen’s Island (Eilean Molach) in front of it. The sketch is one of a number of depictions of Ben Venue in this sketchbook made from around this point in preparation to Turner’s watercolour of Loch Katrine circa 1832 (British Museum),1 which was engraved to illustrate volume 8 of Sir Walter Scott’s Poetical Works, The Lady of the Lake in 1834. There is a very similar view on folio 36 (D26506). (See folio 47; D26528 for details and references).
