Considering the proximity in this sketchbook to views of Loch Achray and the Trossachs, the two sketches of mountain profiles on this page are likely to be of Ben Venue as seen from the northern end of Loch Achray. The top sketch shows most of the mountain while the bottom sketch shows just its summit and northern shoulder. Ben Venue features as a major landmark of Turner’s sketches of Loch Katrine and Loch Achray, and was included in the watercolours he painted of both subjects as illustrations for Sir Walter Scott’s Poetical Works.
