The dozen or so sketches across this page and folio 82 (D26597) are of Ardtornish Castle on the Morvern Coast of the Sound of Mull. Read across the two pages from top left to bottom right, the sketches record Turner’s journey north up the Sound of Mull on his way from Oban to Skye. The sequence therefore begins on folio 82, with two sketches of the castle from the south which are continued at the top of the present page. Third and fourth down are views from the south, made as Turner got close to Ardtornish Point. These continue on folio 82. There is also a small and more distant view of the promontory and castle at the lower centre of the page. The bottom two sketches show the castle from the north, Turner having passed Ardtornish Point. This sketch appears to be inscribed ‘Loch Ghia’, though this is Loch Aline.
For further information about Turner’s sketches of Ardtornish Castle see folio 82.
