The ruins of the twelfth-century Cistercian abbey of Calder are reached by a footpath about half a mile from Calder Bridge, which Turner drew on folio 33 of the sketchbook (D07575). Turner passed through Calder Bridge on his way south from Whitehaven and Egremont, as in the itinerary on folio 1 (D07538). This sketch focuses on the remains of the tower; it appears to be looking from the north. Another view of the abbey is folio 32 (D07573).
