Joseph Mallord William Turner Trees and a Winding Road 1809

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 82 Verso:
Trees and a Winding Road 1809
D07841
Turner Bequest CXII 82a
Pencil on white wove paper, 107 x 180 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Gypsy’ bottom left

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. A similar drawing, with inscription, is on folio 83 verso of the sketchbook (D07843). In both cases Finberg’s title was based on a misreading of the inscription as ‘Cypress’ but the shape of the trees is quite different and Turner’s note must refer instead to a figure or figures that he has not actually drawn. Gypsy communities were common in Sussex.
Verso:
Blank
