Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 49 Verso:
Sportsman and Two Gun Dogs 1809
D07928
Turner Bequest CXIII 49a
Pencil and watercolour on white wove paper, 83 x 114 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. The dogs, one with liver and one with black markings, are out of scale with the man, who is sketched in pencil only. Two more liver and white dogs are on folio 50 verso (D07930), and two different dogs are on folio 51 verso (D07932). On 52 verso (D07934) is a further sketch of a sportsman seated with a gun. These drawings were evidently made on a shoot, which may also have inspired the poem on a shooting accident drafted in this book; see especially note to folio 13 verso (D07873) and Introduction for the suggestion that Turner attended a shoot at Farnley Hall during the 1809 season.
