This sketch is likely to depict the Yarrow Valley near St Mary’s Loch in Selkirkshire. It follows a series of sketches made at the north-east end of the loch (folio 24–30 verso; D26140–D26153) and is followed by views of the valley made on the way to Selkirk (folios 31 verso– 40; D26155–D26172). The bridge in the foreground lies very close to the source of the Yarrow Water at St Mary’s Loch. To its left is the building at Kirkstead with Kirkstead Burn. To the right, labelled ‘Hope’, is Dryhope farm with Dryhope Tower to the right of that. There are further sketches of Dryhope Tower on folios 23 and 23 verso (D26138, D26139).
