This sketch begins, or concludes, a sequence of views of coastal cliffs and headlands as seen from the sea. Similar sketches are on folios 71–72 (D26229–D26231) and there are further sketches of the coast on folios 72 verso–77 verso (D26232–D26242). The sketch opposite to this on folio 71 (D26229) has been identified as Flamborough Head in Yorkshire, and there is a sketch of Whitby on folio 77 verso, suggesting that this and the other coastal sketches in the group are also likely to be of the Yorkshire coast. Turner has included passing vessels on this page’s upper sketch (see also folio 71 verso; D26230) and buildings on the cliff top in the lower sketch. Between the two is a lighthouse. Further lighthouses and towers can be seen on the opposite sketchbook page: folio 71.
There is a brown stain at the top right of the page.
