These three sketches of coastal cliffs belong to a group of sketches of the coast from the sea, that were made by Turner as he travelled south along the east coast from Edinburgh to London (folios 70 verso–77 verso; D26228–D26242). The two sketches on this page are similar to those on folio 75 verso (D26238) which, it has been suggested, may be the cliffs at Ravenscar in Yorkshire.
