The principal sketch on this page depicts Craignethan Castle in a view from the south. Having visited the castle and sketched it from close by (see folio 14 verso; D26286) Turner followed the path shown at the left of this sketch to view the castle from a short distance along Nethan Glen. The castle can be seen here to stand on a wooded bluff overlooking a twist of the River Nethan. In the foreground is a small building that David Wallace-Hadrill has taken to be a mill or dovecot.1
At the bottom left of the page is another small sketch of the castle, this time seen from closer to the south. There are further views from the south on folios 20 and 20 verso (D26297, D26298).
