The view appears to be west-south-west from the shore at Cattedown, looking between the masts on the right to the cylindrical tower of Mont Batten on its peninsula connected to Turnchapel to the south on the left, with Mount Edgcumbe across Plymouth Sound in the distance. The view is still just visible today between the later industrial buildings in the area, at about the point where the railway line crosses Cattedown Road. For other Plymouth views in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 3 verso (D08367).
Technical notes:
There is extensive offsetting from the ink inscription on folio 177 verso opposite (D08693; CXXIII 174a).
