Turner’s viewpoint is Temple Bar, which survives as an archway over the steep path down to the harbour at Clovelly. The masts of boats in the harbour are visible to the north through the aperture at the centre left, and the Devon coast to the east is seen on the right. The drawing continues a little on folio 224 verso opposite (D41521), with steps leading up to a doorway.
Temple Bar can be seen at the head of the step pathway from the harbour in views south from the latter in the contemporary Cornwall and Devon sketchbook (Tate D41323, D41324; Turner Bequest CXXV a 44, 45). For other views of Clovelly see under folio 226 recto (D08766; CXXIII 223).
