The view appears to be to the south-west along the Cornish coast from south of Beeny on the road out of Boscastle (see folio 185 recto; D08705; CXXIII 182) towards Bude (see under folio 4 recto; D08368), making the tower near the centre the lookout above Boscastle’s harbour. Turner’s inscription may indicate ‘Tintagel’ and ‘Padstow’. Tintagel (see the contemporary Cornwall and Devon sketchbook, under Tate D41284; Turner Bequest CXXV a 90) is about three miles beyond Boscastle, with Padstow (see the same sketchbook, under Tate D41306; Turner Bequest CXXV a 30) about twelve miles further again.
There is a similar view on folio 252 verso opposite (D08805; CXXIII 249a).
