The view is towards Charmouth from the Bridport road, looking south-west past Stonebarrow Hill on the left towards the coast in the direction of Lyme Regis. A slighter drawing in the Devonshire Coast, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D08412; Turner Bequest CXXIII 27a) may show much the same view.
Turner was travelling west from Bridport (see Tate D08375, D08452, D08471; Turner Bequest CXXIII 7a, 47a, 55b) towards Lyme (see under Tate D08429; Turner Bequest CXXIII 36). Folio 29 verso of the present book (D08841) shows Lyme in the distance from the beach at Charmouth, which is also the viewpoint for the sketch on folio 29 recto (D08840).
Technical notes:
A jagged tear from the centre of the page to the right-hand edge has been repaired. There is a dark incidental mark at the top left.
Verso:
Blank
