The ruins of Restormel Castle, built on a circular plan, stand north of Lostwithiel, about seven miles inland from the Cornish coast at Fowey, where Turner had sketched between folios 19 verso and 21 verso (D08889, D08893; CXXV 18a, 20a). The castle is seen between trees on the skyline at the centre, looking south from the valley of the River Fowey. There is a tiny thumbnail sketch of a similar view, inscribed ‘Restormels’, in the Devonshire Coast, No.1 sketchbook (Tate D08488; Turner Bequest CXXIII 63); for other views in that book see under Tate D08374 (Turner Bequest CXXIII 7).
Technical notes:
A small loss towards the right of the top edge has been made good. There is a small hole in the sheet above the lowest point on the horizon.
