Turner made several studies of the Villa d’Este, a sixteenth-century villa and formal Renaissance garden in Tivoli built for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este (1509–1572), the son of Lucrezia Borgia. This drawing, continued on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 39 (D14998), depicts part of a panoramic 180-degree view from the Gran Loggia of the villa, looking west across the gardens towards the Roman Campagna and distant mountains. Visible in the foreground of the composition are the irregular turrets and features of the Rometta Fountain on the western perimeter of the estate, whilst in the middle distance to the left can be seen the Via del Colle, the so-called Tempio della Tosse and the tower of Santuario di Ercole Vincitore (Sanctuary of Hercules Victor, formerly known as the Villa of Maecenas).
