This sketch depicts ruined sections of aqueducts in the hills surrounding Tivoli. Turner’s viewpoint appears to be from Colle Ripoli to the south of the town, looking east in the direction of the Via Empolitana towards Castel Madama and the aqueducts of Ponte degli Arci, see folio 85–85 verso (D15087–D15088; Turner Bequest CLXXIX 84–84a). A related view can be seen on folio 73 verso (D15063; Turner Bequest CLXXIX 72a).
