The sketch depicts a view of Tivoli from Monte Catillo to the east, looking towards the Rocca Pia, a massive fortress with four crenallated towers, built by Pope Pius II in 1461. Amongst the buildings silhouetted against the horizon to the right is the campanile of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, near the Villa d’Este, and the campanile of the Cathedral (Duomo) of San Lorenzo.
