During an expedition to Paestum in 1819, Turner took the nineteenth-century road between Naples and Salerno which passed the gates of Pompeii before entering the Lattari mountains at Nocera and Cava de’ Tirreni. This on-the-spot sketch appears to relate to the return journey by the same road and depicts a view from the east of Nocera dei Pagani (present-day Nocera Inferiore) with Vesuvius in the distance beyond.
