Turner has used the inside back cover of this sketchbook for several studies of figures in Italian dress, in particular a couple of contadine, or peasant women in their colourful costumes with the distinctive headdresses of folded cloth. For a more detailed discussion see the Ancona to Rome sketchbook (Tate D14653; Turner Bequest CLXXVII 1). There is also an inverted landscape view which is identified through the artist’s inscription as a view of Capua, a town on the Via Appia, north of Naples.
