The subject of the three uppermost sketches is tentatively identified as views of Lake Avernus with the so-called Temple of Apollo, a ruined Roman bathhouse which lies on the eastern shore. The lowest study meanwhile appears to represent a distant view of Monte Corvara, the rim of a volcanic crater in the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean or Burning Fields) to the west of Naples.
