The sketches on this page relate to Turner’s exploration of Pompeii. In the top left-hand corner is a study of figures from an unidentified fresco or relief. The details in the bottom right-hand corner meanwhile depict ruins from the western side of the Forum. They represent part of a larger composition found on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 21 (D15776). For further sketches and a general discussion of Turner’s visit to Pompeii see the introduction to the sketchbook.
