The hill of Camaldoli rises to the north-west of Naples and is the highest point from which to view the Gulf of Naples and the surrounding area. At the summit of the hill is the Eremo di Camaldoli, a sixteenth-century monastery inhabited by monks of the Camadolese order. Turner made a sequence of studies from this location, see folio 73 (D15871; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 71). This sketch depicts an oblique view of part of the monastery with the panoramic view towards the Tyrrhenian coastline on the left.
