This sketch is part of a view of the hill of Camaldoli with the surrounding landscape. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 77 (D15879; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 75) but visible on this side is the sixteenth-century monastery situated on the summit of the hill with Vesuvius in the background on the right. The curved stone bench in the left-hand foreground can still be seen in situ today.
For a more detailed discussion and further views from Camaldoli see folio 73 (D15871; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 71).
