Turner made a number of sketches of the panoramic views to be seen from the summit of the Camaldoli Hill to the north-west of Naples. This study depicts the vista looking east from the sixteenth-century monastery across the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius. For a more detailed discussion and further views from Camaldoli see folio 73 (D15871; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 71).
