As Cecilia Powell first identified the subject of this view is the Church of Santo Spirito in Florence, seen from the Boboli Gardens to the south-east.1 Turner’s vista looks in the direction of the River Arno with the tall pointed campanile and dome of Santo Spirito dominating the right-hand middle distance. Visible beyond is a second dome belonging to the Church of San Frediano in Cestello, whilst rising on the far left-hand side is the hill of Bellosguardo. Separate studies of an unknown building appear in the bottom left-hand corner. For further studies of the Boboli Gardens see folio 50 verso (D16570).
