Turner’s viewpoint for this sketch of Florence from Fiesole appears to be the convent of San Francesco to the west of the town. The vista looks south-west across the countryside towards the distant silhouette of the Duomo and the rest of the city. Winding towards Florence across the centre of the composition is the River Mugnone. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 75 (D16610).
For a fuller description and further studies from Fiesole see folio 30 verso (D16542).
