Turner’s inscription at the bottom centre of this page identifies the location for this landscape sketch as Fiesole, a hill town to the north-west of Florence, overlooking the valley of the Arno. His viewpoint appears to be on the lower slopes to the west of the town looking south towards the distant city, identifiable from the large dome of the Duomo. A small part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 78 verso (D16617). Further sketches from Fiesole can be found on folios 30 verso, 31, 74–78, 79 verso, 84 (D16542, D16543, D16608–D16616, D16619, D16627).
