In early 1820, at the end of his six month tour of Italy, Turner headed homeward and crossed the Channel between Calais and Dover. This page contains studies of shipping seen at either of the two harbours. Further sketches can be found on the inside back cover (D40989).
Also in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet is a study of a woman wearing a large frilly cap. Turner has annotated the sketch with colour notes, including the comment in French, ‘Chapeau Rouge’ [Red hat].
