In early 1820, at the end of his six month tour of Italy, Turner headed homeward and crossed the Channel between Calais and Dover. This page contains studies of shipping seen near the coastline of either of the two harbours, although the artist’s inscription within the uppermost view suggests that this may depict the white cliffs of Dover. Related sketches can be found on folio 106 verso (D16889; Turner Bequest CXCIII 105a).
