Joseph Mallord William Turner Sketch of a Headland c.1819

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 23 Verso:
Sketch of a Headland circa 1819
D13975
Turner Bequest CLXXII 23 a
Pencil on white wove paper, 99 x 155 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The rough, schematic nature of this landscape makes the subject uncertain but it appears to be a sketch of a distant headland with the sea on the right hand side. The location is unidentified, although it may represent an English scene, depicting the same piece of land as the sketch on folio 24 verso (D13977). It may predate the artist’s use of the sketchbook as a notebook relating to his Italian travels in the autumn of 1819.
