Turner’s inscription ‘Macerata’ is the only current clue for identifying the subject matter of this sketchbook page. The page is roughly divided into three sections. Top left appears to show a number of architectural elements including columns and arches. The forms in the top right-hand corner are so indistinct as to be almost indecipherable. The bottom half of the page shows a view of mountainous landscape seen from a high viewpoint, probably the road outside the walls of the town.
