The subject of the two sketches on this page is the ruined fortress south of Serravalle di Chienti, a town in the Apennines approximately fifteen miles north-east of Foligno. For a further discussion see folio 27 (D14704). Turner has used the sketchbook both horizontally and vertically. The larger sketch is inverted on the page.
