This sketch represents a view amidst the Apennines on the descent towards Foligno after Colfiorito. The subject is not conclusively identified but the topography of the mountains and the road winding around the slopes to the left suggests that it may represent a view of the village of Pale, approximately four miles north-east of Foligno, with the small town of Belfiore in the distance beyond. The sketch spills over slightly onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 33 (D14716), where the building near the top of the slope would be a small monastery, the Eremo di Santa Maria di Giacobbe.
