Turner’s route to Rome took him around the perimeter of the Umbrian town of Narni from east to south-west. These two sketches depict the view from the road leaving Narni to the south with the town on the right and the steep valley of the Nera Gorge on the left. In the top right-hand corner of each drawing are the square towers of the Rocca d’Albornoz.
